Here’s a “riddle” for you! What do Jedi’s and Wookiees have in common with literacy??? Any guesses? 🙂 Well, I won’t keep you hanging too long – mostly because we think that the answer is fabulously fun and exciting! It’s an answer that’s sure to catch the attention of both those who love to read and those who are fans of Star Wars. The answer is: Star Wars Reads Day II! Yes, it is an international, day-long celebration that ties together the best of both worlds – reading & literacy and Star Wars! Star Wars Reads Day II is coming to Canada this year on October 5, 2013 (this Saturday!) and DK Canada is helping us celebrate and be a part of this event by giving all of us some great discounts and sale prices on the items in their Star Wars Boutique!

DK Canada has loads of great Star Wars books, and we thought we’d share a few of them with you today…just to whet your appetite and get you ready for Star Wars Reads Day! Our top picks these days when it comes to books are a variety of leveled readers. DK Canada is a fabulous resource for readers – especially Star Wars themed readers.

One of our current favorites is R2D2 and Friends. With a son who’s fascinated with all things space and/or robots, this was a great book to get him excited about reading. I just love seeing him curled up on the couch reading a book! In this reader, you will be able to learn all about R2-D2, C-3P0, and other droids. It is a Level 2 reader so it is perfect for a budding reader. It has longer sentences, more vocabulary, fun little information boxes to read as well as a simple index in the back. Another great Level 2 reader that we have on our bookshelf is Star Wars Journey Through Space. This reader provides a fun and fairly detailed tour of the Star Wars galaxy (including planets, moons and the people and creatures who live in this unique galaxy).

For your younger children who are just beginning to read, the Pre-Level 1 readers are perfect. One of our favorites is Star wars Blast Off! It’s a great book to get a reluctant reader going. There are plenty of photos and pictures to enjoy in this book and the sentences are short and very read-able.

Of course, there are plenty of books for the more advanced reader as well. Star Wars Star Pilot is a level 3 reader and is a great ‘next step’ for those who are reading well on their own. It features less images and more reading, yet it still is exciting and interesting for young readers.

Star Wars readers are a great way to get your kids reading – especially if they enjoy the imaginary world of Star Wars! you could even join in the fun by having your own Star Wars Reads party at home. Be sure to check out the great Star Wars books at DK Canada too – selected titles are 30% off right now in their Star Wars Boutique!
