Wild Eats & Holiday Treats!

60239100965870LHave you ever seen some of those adorable and incredibly creative “food pictures” on pinterest? Or on another website? I sure have and there’s no question as to whether or not my kids would like eating a “sheep, owl, monkey or pig made out of tasty (and healthy) foods! In fact, they’d love it. The problem though is me…you see, I’m just not really that creative or crafty. As a busy mom, time is also an issue. The truth is, we eat a lot of plain and simple foods. There’s nothing wrong with this, but I think you’ll agree that every once in a while it is fun to ‘spice things up a bit!’

Wild Eats and Adorable Treats by Jill Mills has been my answer book for getting creative with some of our foods – especially breakfasts and snacks for us. This book has 40 ideas for animal-inspired meals and snacks. When the book arrived, our kids spent the better part of an hour browsing through it and dreaming of making and enjoying some of these wild eats and adorable treats. 🙂 Then it was time to make the pictures ‘come to life!’

bookAs a mom, a few of the things that I loved about this book is that recipes are incredibly SIMPLE! With simple & HEALTHY ingredients. The book features ideas that can be used for breakfasts, lunches, snacks and even dinner and dessert! So far we’ve used it mostly for breakfasts and snacks. As I said, these ideas are simple. So simple that our 9 year old son was able to choose one, make it and have it ready for our family to enjoy later that day! Do you see him here with that cute little monkey face? They were a hit and he was real proud of his ‘cooking’ abilities! 😉

60239100891500LAnother book that would definitely be fun for the Christmas season – or really any holiday – is Holiday Crafts by Jill Mills0.. Now, due mostly to the fact that I have 5 beautiful children and they keep us fairly busy, in order for us to get crafty it has to either come in a craft kit, or be very simple. I wasn’t too sure what I would find when I cracked open this book as many craft books I’ve looked at in the past have been a little ‘too much’ for us. 🙂 I was pleasantly surprised to find that Holiday Crafts was NOT at all like previous craft books I’ve seen. It has simple crafts with simple supplies that we would definitely have on hand (things like construction paper, string, toilet paper rolls, etc.)

book1The book is geared for ages 3 to 10 so my older children were able to look at the pictures and make all some of them all on their own….or help their younger sibling get crafty without my help. It’s fabulous. There are crafts for every season and holiday of the year too…from St. Patricks Day to Christmas and lots more!

The book has easy-to-follow instructions and full color photographs. In fact, for most of them, my kids just looked at the photograph and were able do the craft with just the photo for their guide.

It’s often the simply things that create memories that our children remember for a lifetime. So why not take a little extra time this holiday season or in the coming year and do some simple crafts or get a little creative in your snacks & meals!
