Raincoast Books – Harry Potter Illustrated Edition! ~Giveaway!!

raincoast-harry-potter-2There’s one series of books that I held off on reading for awhile. You see, I didn’t think I’d like them. I’d never been one that had read much for magical stories and figured I wasn’t a fan of that kind of a fantasy story. Yup, I’m talking about the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling. The good news is, I didn’t start reading them until the series was about half done. The bad news is that it took FOREVER for the rest of the books to be released so that I could sit down and read them in one sitting! I guess that’s a good reason to not start reading a series when the first book comes out! Haha!

I was visiting the Raincoast Books website recently and my eyes bugged out when I notice the book featured right there at the top of the page! It was a Harry Potter Illustrated Edition! They shouldn’t do that! You know, put books that HAVE to be fabulous right there on the top of their page. Oh wait, that’s their job! Lucky me, my job is reviewing, and they sent me a beautiful, hard cover, with a bookmark ribbon, detailed illustrations and all, copy of the book! I have to admit, I was kind of like a kid in a candy store when I opened the package and saw it had arrived! It didn’t take me long to sit down and start flipping through it!

Now, I know I’ve exclaimed before about illustrators and my love for their talent. Well, let me tell you, Jim Kay has got talent in spades! The pictures are SO detailed and so well done it’s simply amazing. And you know, it must be interesting to illustrate a book that has already been made into a movie. When we first read a book, we create an image of the characters in the book based on the author’s description of them. But then when a movie is created as well, it’s hard not to overlay the actor’s distinctive features over our previous images of the characters! So then when you consider someone like Jim Kay illustrating a book from the series, I can imagine it was difficult to put aside the images of the actors in order to draw the characters as he imagined them. Or maybe it was easy! With the talent that Jim Kay has, it wouldn’t surprise me!  In any case, check out his illustration below of Hagrid…..

raincoast-harry-potterSo this illustrated edition is actually book #2 in the series – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. If you haven’t read the Harry Potter series, I do suggest you head over to your local library and start with book one. The nifty part, and somewhat frustrating part – depending on your age, is that the books advance in difficulty along with Harry. He gets older every year. The books get longer and more advanced each year. So if you are a youngun who falls in love with book one and wants to read the entire series, it might be harder to get through book seven than you would expect. However, in hindsight, it’s actually very well done because they should get more advanced as Harry gets older! And even if you’re not a fan of magic or fantasy books, I *still* suggest you go check them out. Read the first one and see what you think! I was totally hooked!

raincoast-harry-potter-3 And so now this illustrated version. First – this is not a paperback-read-it-once-and-pass-it-along kind of book. This is a big, beautiful, hardcover book! It has a full jacket cover. It has a bright orange bookmark ribbon. And it has these amazing illustartions throughout! Sometimes they’re a full page, sometimes they’re a double page spread and sometimes it’s a series of spiders leading all the way across both pages with writing all around them! I can’t say enough about the detail in these illustrations! They truly are fabulous! It really makes me want to go buy book one so that I have the full set! Actually, Bloomsbury will be selling a boxed set – Books One and Two – together, which will come out near the end of November. What a grand gift for someone who loves the Harry Potter series!

Would you like to have your own copy of not only Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Illustrated Edition, but ALSO book #1, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in that great boxed set I mentioned above? Raincoast Books has agreed to give one away! Please use the entry form below, open to Canada only. Contest closes November 22, 2016.
