Raincoast Books – The Weekenders!

I love to read. And as such, I often have favourite authors and get stuck in a rut reading all of their books and not branching out to other authors. I do find e-books help on that front – as I see other authors featured when I log into the library system. However, I’m always happy to check out new authors and I love it when I find a new-to-me-author that writes “must read” books!

Today I get to tell you about my newest “must read” author! Her name is Mary Kay Andrews and while I *know* I’ve seen her books around before, I have never read one! I must say, I really enjoyed “The Weekenders”! Mary Kay definitely writes a mystery, though they’re not as much “thrillers” as some other mysteries, which was just fine by me! I love a mystery, but they don’t always have to be hard and fast ones! This particular book is all about Riley and her daughter Maggy and their upcoming holiday on Belle Isle island where they have a summer home. However, Riley is not looking forward to the task she and her husband have of telling their daughter that they are separating. But the problems begin when Wendell doesn’t show up to ride the ferry with them. The problems multiply when Wendell is found floating off the dock the next day.

It doesn’t take long for Riley to realize that there were a lot of things her husband didn’t tell her. Like that their home on the island has been foreclosed. Like that he has mismanaged their money to the point where they have none left. Naturally, since it appears that Wendell has been murdered, Riley becomes a suspect and starts to feel like the authorities don’t want to look anywhere but at her! So she and her lawyer friends start doing their own investigating! Before long they find more and more evidence that Wendell was not who she thought he was! And that everything she thought she knew about their marriage and finances are not true.

Mary Kay Andrews writes a great tale! This is not a short book, but at no time did I feel like the words were filler and I was bored with the book. Rather, I had a downright hard time putting the book down! There was plenty of intrigue and there were even multiple mysteries running along beside each other that added to the questions that needed to be answered by the end of the book! I love an author that keeps me guessing about what is going on!

In case Mary Kay Andrews happens to be new to you as well, and you’d like to add her to your list of favourite authors, I’m happy to tell you that this is her 24th book! Lucky for us, we don’t need to stop at one and we don’t need to anxiously wait for her next book to come out! We can just start reading all the rest! She even has a cookbook filled with “recipes with a southern accent” in case you’d like to check that out! I know I’m going to be headed to the library to check out a few more of her books – I think I’m hooked!

Thanks again to Raincoast Books for sharing another great author and another great book with me so that I can share it with you! We have so many talented authors in our world and it’s a joy to discover another one! Check out Raincoast’s web page as they frequently update the books featured on their home page – you just never know which one will pique your interest! And as always, check out your local library and bookstore if you want to read this one!

I’ve just finished reading Life of Pi, I hadn’t realised that Yann Martel is a Canadian author. The book was certainly an awful lot better than I expected and very well written.
