Scholastic Monday ~ Blackflies!

Spring is here and with the arrival of a week of REALLY nice weather, the bug-world has woken up. Oh bugs….there are some that I can live with, and some that I could most definitely live without! A few of those include blackflies, mosquitoes and wood ticks. Right now we’re spending our days checking for ticks, but I fully expect the mosquitoes to be out ready to bite very soon. Blackflies aren’t much better….though we don’t have too many of them in our area yet.

Our family is not the only one who has experienced too many flies and mosquitoes in their yards! It just so happens that Robert Munsch and Jay Odjick have ‘been there and done that’ when it comes to trying to get away from these flying, biting insects! The best part is that they’ve lived through it to write a fabulously fun book that kids are going to love!

Blackflies by Robert Munsch (illustrated by Jay Odjick) is the story of Helen and her family. Helen loves spring (so do we!!)  but Helen does NOT love the gazillions of blackflies and mosquitoes (and neither do we!) But this year Helen has a plan….

Helen’s plan entails what most any kid’s plan would! Spring has arrived, the snow is gone, the sun is shining and the blackflies and mosquitoes are on their way. Uh oh! She’s not completely sure if they’ve arrived yet or not, so instead of checking herself, she carries out her plan and sends out her little sister (in her pj’s!) to check. The blackflies and mosquitoes most certainly have arrived and carry her sister off in a swarm. It doesn’t stop there! Helen’s dad also gets carried off and now Helen is left to devise and carry out a rescue plan….what will it be? How strong does the bug spray have to be to scare off the blackflies and mosquitoes? And what about the wolf and the bear?

All those questions are ones you’ll find the answers to in Blackflies! 😉 It’s a great story…a little outrageous and loads of fun! Kids will love it and it might just become your new spring or summer favorite!
