Raincoast Books – Lawyer for the Cat!

If you enjoy a light-hearted mystery, some comic relief and a bit of lawyer-speak, I have a novel for you to enjoy! This is a Sally Baynard novel, written by Lee Robinson and is called “Lawyer for the Cat”. This is actually the second Sally Baynard novel, and now I’m going to have to go read the first too! Shucks anyway…my summer reading list is getting longer and longer!

So the premise of this novel is based on Sally, the lawyer, being given the responsibility of picking a suitable caretaker for the cat of a lady who passed away! And the cat didn’t just need a caretaker – the cat came with a fortune! A fortune that would go to her son, along with the old house, if the details of her will were followed! And of course, no novel like this would be quite right without the son being someone you just want to see NOT get the fortune!

Needless to say, Sally has her job cut out for her. The lady who passed away was a wee bit eccentric. She also offered three options for the cat’s caretaker, all of whom had to be interviewed. Now, naturally, when there’s a cat and the potential for a healthy sum of money each year for taking care of said cat, sometimes that brings a few people out of the woodwork who may be, shall we say, unsavory? Sally had to deal with thinly veiled threats. She had to deal with the cat being absconded. She had to deal with the old judge who wouldn’t just let her pass the cat off without doing a thorough job of checking out each of the caretaker options! And in the midst of all this, Sally has Beatrice, the cat, staying with her!

Ah yes, books like this are kind of fun! While I enjoy a thriller, I really enjoy a mystery like this one that doesn’t drive the adrenaline quite so high! It’s a lighter read, yet totally enjoyable! The son might make you wish he’d never get any of his Mom’s fortune, but then you learn a few things about him that explain a few things and maybe he’s not so bad after all. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading it’s predecessor, “Lawyer for the Dog”.

If you’re looking for a light read this summer, I recommend “Lawyer for the Cat”. Take a peek at your local library or bookstore and head over to Amazon or Chapters. As always, a big thanks to Raincoast Books for opening my eyes to so many new authors! Check them out on Facebook and Instagram!
