Making Memories: Explore the Calgary Zoo!

Summer is my favorite season of the year. Yes, there are great things about all the seasons….I love the freshness & newness of spring, the beautiful fall leaves and crisp fall evenings, and the winter nights spent by the fireplace, drinking tea. They are all great, but for me…summer is still my favorite. Being able to run outside and play in shorts and t-shirt, running barefoot, planting a garden, family holidays, vacations, and camping trips, etc. are all things that I love about summer. And I have an inkling that I’m not the only one who looks forward to and anticipates the arrival of summer. 😉

This summer we’ve got some exciting plans – including a trip to Calgary, AB! This will be one of the highlights of the summer…in fact, our oldest has a countdown going so he can keep track of how many more days before we go to Calgary! 🙂 There are LOADS of great things for families to see and do while in Calgary and we’re looking forward to taking in a few of them…including the Calgary Zoo.

Zoos are always a great place for family visits…but we’re especially looking forward to the Calgary Zoo! They have a WIDE selection of animals ranging from giraffes, to butterflies to big horn sheep. There are lots of animals to see that our kids have never had the opportunity to see before and we are looking forward to not only seeing the animals, but also to learning more about them and how we can make sure to take care of the world that both us and the animals live on.

In addition to all of the current animals at Calgary Zoo, there are some new ones arriving VERY soon! The lemurs will be landing on July 5! After this date you’ll be able to fully enjoy  lemur habitat, watch them play, leap, eat leaves and shoots and soak up the sun.

In the Land of the Lemurs you’ll find black-and-white ruffed lemurs, red fronted lemurs, and ring-tailed lemurs. We can’t wait to check out the lemurs when we visit the Calgary Zoo this summer.

At this time of year, the Garden Gallery at the zoo is spectacular (or so I’ve heard! I’m looking forward to seeing it myself! 🙂 ). From spring to fall, hundreds of butterflies can be found in the Garden Gallery. We’ve got one child who particularly LOVES butterflies and dreams of them landing on her shoulder or hand. I wonder if her dream might come true this summer?!

This spring the zoo has also added a few new babies that you can visit – including some from the big horn sheep, Rocky Mountain goats and Muskox! Of course, the Calgary Zoo always has loads of great programming available as well – you can check all of their current programming out on the website.

Zoos are an amazing place to visit during the summer months. If you are in the Calgary area, planning a visit to the Calgary Zoo would be a great event or day trip to add to your itinerary! Head over to the zoo’s website to learn more about the zoo, including cost, hours, location and view the loooong list of amazing animals that you’ll get to visit!
