Scholastic Monday ~ Big & Little Are Best Friends

Best friends are some of the sweetest parts of life. 🙂 The great part is that our friends are not carbon copies of ourselves….instead they are unique, special and sometimes very different! Scholastic Canada has a sweet story about two friends who are very different yet find ways to make their friendship work….

Big and Little Are Best Friends: A Story of Two Friends by Michael Garland is just what the title portrays…a story of two best friends who are opposites in almost every way! Michael Garland is a New York Times bestselling author and artist and it is easy to see why as this story and the illustrations that go along with it are heartwarming, adorable and capture the heart and attention of children and even of us parents. 😉

The story unfolds as Big (who is an elephant) and Little (who is a mouse) meet. There are so many differences. One likes soft music and one loves a loud drum. One likes savory food and one like all kinds of tasty sweets. The list goes one….and you might begin to wonder if these two very different animals could ever be friends.

This charming story is an excellent reminder that despite these differences, Big and Little can still be the best of friends. I love the subtle emphasis on the lesson that you should not need to change who you are in order to become friends with someone else.

Big and Little Are Best Friends is a wonderful story and I’ve got a feeling it will become a new favorite in our home this summer!

A lovely story showing that differences don’t have to matter. You can see this in the animal world quite often too. Best friends don’t have to be alike at all.
