Let’s Pretend!

Pretend play is one of the best parts of being a kid. In fact…watching our kids imagine and play together is one of my favorite parts of being an adult too…sometimes I even get to join in on the fun. čśë There are days when I watch parades, fashion shows and get served all kinds of delicious pretend meals – like tonight I got “oatmeal” made from bread, grapes, and cheese. haha!

Great Pretenders is one of our favorite places to look for all the accessories and goodies you need to have creative, imaginative, fun play times! Check out these adorable Pink Princess Slippers. Oh my. I don’t know any little girls who wouldn’t just┬áadore these. They have a heart gem with marabou trim and great grip on the bottom to keep your little Fairies and Princesses safe while they dance, skip and twirl. With the all the skipping and twirling that went on, one of the slippers did loose its gem and marabou trim. We were a bit disappointed that it came apart so easily, however, I was able to put it back together for our little princess without too much trouble. Even though it’s summer and may be a bit warm for slippers, in my daughter’s opinion, it is never to warm to wear pretty princess slippers like these! čśë

Did you know that there was a time when there weren’t many creative or imaginative toys on the market?? These are my favorite kinds of toys to have my children play with….the possibilities are limitless when you’re using creativity and imagination. Joyce Keelan, the founder of Great Pretenders made a mark in the world of “play” when she began creating her own business based on creative and imaginative toys. I thought I’d share a few of her entrepreneurial tips with you…they are inspiring…and who knows, maybe you’ll be the next one to start a business! *wink*

1. Know yourself

According to Joyce, the first step to being successful as an Entrepreneur is knowing yourself. What are your weaknesses? What is your appetite for risk? How good are you at paperwork? Do you work well in a team?

2. Know your customer

Most advice on startup columns will touch on cash flow. Cash flow is critical as it funds growth, and to grow too fast/too slow is the kiss of death for many companies. However, Joyce would say that achieving a reliably-positive cash flow has come back to one thing; being able to recognize trends and changes in the target consumer, and reacting to them in a timely way. The faster you can react (and ideally predict) changes in your target market & key consumer, the healthier your business will be.

3. Overestimate your costs

The bottom line is that your business needs to make money. Over-estimating your costs means even in a “worst-case”, you should be OK.

4. Get a Mentor / Make a Plan

Having a road map for success is critical. After having clearly defined your business goal, don’t let yourself be overwhelmed. Remember: any goal, however big, can be broken into smaller, more manageable goals. Finding a mentor can be a very useful step in creating/executing a plan.

5. Paper It Up

Agree on a supplier discount? Paper it up. Renegotiate Terms with a customer/designer/free lancer/employee? Altercation/warning/negative or positive feedback to an employee or team member? PAPER IT UP. And above all, when it comes to partnership agreements, paper it up. Lastly, having a written agreement can clearly set expectations and divide responsibilities. The same can be said for written job descriptions, performance reviews, feedback etc. Having the discipline to paper up your business activities from the beginning is a great way to be sure you are on track for long-term success.

There you have it! Some fabulous tips and advice from Joyce Keelan! Don’t forget to head on over to Great Pretenders and add some new items to your enhance the pretend play and imaginations in your home this summer. They’ve added a TON of new items recently, so you’ll certainly want to take a peek at what they have to offer.
