“Mom & Me: An Art Journal to Share”

Sometimes as a busy mom I find that I don’t make the time to sit and play or create with my kids.  There are always clothes to fold, dishes to wash and meals to prepare.  I often have to remind myself that the kids really do bask in the attention and would prefer a mom that is involved in what they’re doing over clean dishes or folded clothes! 😉

With three boys it’s hard to connect with the boys’ interests.  I am not as skilled in building war ships out of Lego or playing “cops and robbers”.  The book Mom and Me: An Art Journal to Share by Lacy Mucklow and Bethany Robertson is an awesome way to connect with your kids. My kids love to draw and create.  They also enjoy imagining and dreaming up stories.  This book combines both. 🙂

You get to sit one on one with a special little someone and chose a page to do together.  My oldest son and I chose the page that lets you pick out your own super power.  We then sat together and drew our super powers and chatted about it together.  It is a great way to start a conversation with your child.  I find that my kids open up about a lot of topics once they have that individual attention.

Some fun topics include: drawing people that you trust and would invite to dinner, drawing a treasure you would like to find, and drawing something that makes you feel happy.  There are also opportunities to draw things that make you feel sad or something that you did that needs to be forgiven.  There is some pretty deep stuff in this book.  It is hard to get emotions and feelings out of some of my kids.  This book is a good way to start conversations that may not come up otherwise.

Mom and Me: An Art Journal to Share has beautiful illustrations and is full colour. It is very engaging and will be a wonderful keep sake.  I am looking forward to doing many more pages with my kids.
