Memories We Made ~ Calgary Zoo

A while back, I shared about our excitement about an upcoming visit to the Calgary Zoo this summer! Well….the much anticipated visit has come and gone and it’s time for us to share with you some of our real life adventures and experiences from the Calgary Zoo….

From the moment we stepped foot into the zoo, the kids were fascinated, and I must admit – so was I! I love exploring new places, and watching our kids experience and see things for the first time. Our only problem was…there was so much to see….where should we go first?! The Calgary Zoo hosts a wide variety of animals ranging from exotic animals to African animals to Canadian animals.

We decided to start off with one of my favorite zoo animals – the flamingo. I always loved seeing the flamingo’s as a little girl, and they were just as quiet and pink as I remembered. πŸ˜‰ As we continued along, we got to enjoy animals from all around the world. The tiger was prowling back and forth; the cougar came right up and looked at us (probably thinking we looked kinda tasty!); the giraffes were wandering around in their pen, heads held high, Β and the penguins were being fed some fish. In fact, we got the privilege of listening to a short talk from the penguin keeper as well as being able to watch them eat, swim…and be a little noisy!

The indoor rainforest section was fascinating as well. All sorts of amazing plants, flowers, birds, butterflies, etc. We even found a banana tree growing in there! Each are of the zoo had signs with information on the animals, or the species that lived there. It was fun to be able to not only see the animal but to also take a moment to learn a neat fact or two about them.

Of course, we had to check out the latest additions…the lemur families! The Land of the Lemurs was one of our favorite parts. It wasn’t too busy (I heard it was pretty popular earlier this summer!)Β so, after a few instructions, we were able to go right on in.

I have officially decided that lemurs are a really fun animal. They were sleeping when we first walked in but a few moments after we entered the zookeeper decided it was time for some food. Their nap ended immediately! πŸ™‚ We got to watch the lemurs scurry around, eating, fighting over their food and just being lemurs.

The Land of the Lemurs is an amazing chance to be able to experience these unique animals in an up close and personal way as you are right in their habitat with them. On the outskirts of the habitat there are some fun suspension bridges for kids to enjoy as well.

After a morning of seeing fascinating animals, it was time for lunch. The zoo has plenty of picnic spots with tables if you’d like to eat a bag lunch that you packed yourself, or they also have lots of food booths and small places that you can buy meals or treats such as ice cream, popsicles, etc. There’s no lack of good food at the Calgary zoo. πŸ™‚

There might come a time when us parents or grandparents are getting weary…and our feet are tired of walking and our arms are tired of pushing a stroller. Besides the picnic spots, there are also a few playground areas sprinkled throughout the zoo. It’s the perfect opportunity to sit down for a few minutes while the kids keep playing and running at the playground areas…they’re definitely the ones with never-ending energy, right? πŸ˜‰ This snake slide was a favorite. After climbing up through a maze of sorts to get to the top of it, you can also imagine that it was a lot of fun to come down and end up right there in the snake’s mouth!

As you can see, the list of great stuff to see and do at the Calgary Zoo seems to just go on and on and on! I haven’t even touched on the hippo’s or the walk through Prehistoric Park! Our family thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Calgary Zoo and we would highly recommend it as an amazingly fun and educational experience! Be sure to book of an entire day for your trip to the zoo so you’ll be able to have time to do a little bit of everything. πŸ™‚

Psssst….while we were at the zoo I saw something exciting! Next summer a new animal will be joining the Calgary Zoo and it is none other than another one of my all-time favorite animals – Giant pandas!! You might want be ahead of the game and pencil in a visit to the Calgary zoo next summer too!
