Raincoast Books – Vinegar Socks!

I’ve always been intrigued with essential oils and herbs and the ancient remedies. You know, all those things that we’ve been losing knowledge of for the last 80 years or so and now we’re trying to gain it all back! Tis a pity, really! I’m a pretty firm believer that we need to use a combination of Western medicine and alternative medicine. Yes, if your arm is broken, by all means, head to the doctor and get it casted! However, there are many times when alternative medicine can step in and provide great assistance with less risk! As always though, you need to know what you’re doing!

Vinegar Socks – Traditional Home Remedies for Modern Living” by Karin Berndl and Nici Hofer intrigued me the moment I saw it. It’s so neat to learn about traditional remedies! There are several things I really liked about this book. First off – the Contents gives not only a listing of all the recipes, but it also lists the uses. Secondly – the simplicity. Each recipe has a full page picture on one side and then all the information you need on the other. That information is broken down into three sections: Things You’ll Need, Get Started, and Why We Believe it Works. I don’t know about you, but that section on why we believe it works is a great section to include. It’s always good to have an idea of the mechanics behind why something works! It also helps convince those skeptics out there that they should try a particular remedy! Oh wait, there are no skeptics! Haha!

The back of the book also includes an “Ailment Index” – so when you feel yourself getting sick, grab this book and look it up! For example, sore throat coming on? Six options to choose from. Troubles with digestion? Take your pick from five different recipes. Lack of circulation got you cold? There are four recipes to try your hand at.

Some of these recipes are simple. For example, the Lavender Bath consists of only two ingredients, one being water. Bet you can’t guess the other ingredient! Haha! Other recipes might have six ingredients. Most of the ingredients are ones you’ll have in your house, but you might have to order online or visit a natural product store to find items like horseradish root, elderflowers, or lime blossoms. Or come to my house and I can set you up with dandelion leaves and nettles!

Oh, and the photography in this book is simply beautiful.  That might be mainly due to the fact that Karin is a photographer!

I really appreciate the simplicity of this book and the recipes. They’re not long and drawn out, they’re not confusing, they’re just old-time simple! And this isn’t the only book that these two have produced. They have also written “All Natural Beauty – Organic & Homemade Beauty Products”. It has another batch of recipes, just along a little different line! If you’re interested in purchasing either of these books, head over to your local bookstore, or check them out at your favourite online store! Thanks to Raincoast Books for letting me review “Vinegar Socks” – now to remember to use these recipes next time I’m feeling out of sorts!
