Raincoast Books – Melts!

I love a grilled cheese sandwich. To me there’s nothing more of a comfort food than a toasty, crispy, cheesey grilled cheese sandwich! Add a bite of dill pickle to every bite and you have me a perfect meal. “Melts”, by Fern Green is a beautiful hard covered book with a cut out of a slice of bread on the front cover showing through to a beautiful picture of a grilled cheese sandwich.

If you’re like me and your grilled cheese sandwiches consists of bread, butter, cheddar cheese, and that’s it, then this is the book for you! There are over 50 recipes and they’re not just cheese ones either! There are Classics, Adventure, Cheesetastic, Hungry, and Sweetness. Fern starts out the cookbook with tips and tricks on bread, cheese, butter, and also sides that would go good with your sandwich. Let me say this, she is a Grilled Cheese Queen! I love her idea of rubbing a garlic clove on the outside of the bread to add even more flavour! She also has some nifty ideas for flavoured butters!

Now what about these grilled cheese sandwiches, you ask? First, she starts off with the Classics. The second one is a favourite with our family, the Tuna Melt! Now I know what we’re having for supper tomorrow night! There are also others like The Club, Ham and Cheese, but there are a few others that are not in my classic repertoire. For example, the Beans and Cheese sandwich!

Then come the Adventure sandwiches. These ones are inspired from around the world! The first one would go over very well with my hubby as it’s made with pulled pork! There’s even one with meatballs?! The Portobello Mushroom one also sounds delicious. There are quite a number in this category that require ingredients that aren’t generally in my kitchen. However, there are lots of others that I would enjoy taste testing. The Smoked Bacon and Cheese sounds delightful as well.

Moving on to Cheesetastic, also known as “the best cheesy melts you have ever tasted!” Now keep in mind, there are more cheeses in this world than cheddar, mozzarella, and marble. However, those are the three I was raised on! Thus, my taste in cheese tends towards the mild. This chapter will expand your cheesiness to include gorgonzola, feta, Brie, plus a few others that I had never heard of! The very first one in this chapter sounds absolutely fabulous! It has cheddar cheese and garlic. Mmmm-good! There are also sandwiches with pickled beetroot, sauerkraut, kimchi, and cream cheese. I love that variety!

For those of you that are extraordinairily hungry today, the Hungry chapter should fill the bill. I love what she says at the beginning of this chapter! “With double carb options and full-flavored flavored fillings, this chapter delivers. If you want to chuck everything at a grilled sandwich, this is where it happens.” This is the chapter where you find cauliflower waffles instead of bread! This is also where you find potato in your sandwich. And this is where you find pasta in your sandwich! I must say, Fern’s vision of sandwiches have definitely expanded my vision of sandwiches!

The last chapter is the Sweetness chapter. These recipes encourage us to experiment with different breads, especially ones with fruits and nuts in them. The one that really appeals to me is the Apple and Cinnamon with Toasted Pecans. Doesn’t that sound delish? I’m pretty sure the Chocolates, Cashew Butter, and Raspberry sandwich would go down just fine in my house!

This book is a beautiful cookbook! The photos are gorgeous. The variety is mind-blowing. What more do we need?! Thanks again to Raincoast Books for sharing this delicious book with me. Fern has written several other cookbooks and you can also head over and take a peek at her Italian Kitchen Garden and Yurt Retreat.
