Scholastic Monday ~ Thank You, Mr. Panda

“Thank you” is such a short phrase. Only 2 little words. It doesn’t take long to say and it seems so simple, but I’ve heard over and over again how meaningful those two words are. Despite the fact that they are “only” 2 words, they carry a wealth of meaning that can be tough to describe. “Thank you” shows gratitude; it shows that you’ve noticed what someone has done for you; it shows that you have good manners; it recognizes that you are thinking of the thought behind each gift that you receive. Yes,”Thank You” really are two very important words.

Since “Thank You” is something that needs to be said often, it is also something that most (if not all!) of us parents want to teach our children the importance of. Thank You, Mr. Panda by Steve Antony is a great place to start. Thank you, Mr. Panda from Scholastic Canada is geared specifically towards kids aged 3-5. Generous Mr. Panda is giving away gifts to all of his animals friends. The thing is that most of his friends are not being very grateful about the gifts they have received. Perhaps it is because the gifts aren’t quite right. For example, Octopus gets only six colorful socks – even though he has eight legs. The story is the same with most of the other animals until we get to Lemur. He knows that even if the gift isn’t perfect, it is the thought that counts the most. Little Lemur sets a wonderful example of gratefulness for the other animals and for those reading the book.

Mr. Panda books are a kid-friendly way of teaching kids important lessons – such as saying “thank you” and recognizing that it’s the thought behind the present that counts the most. It’s a great way to have both a fun and character building reading time with your children.
